The Bangladesh cricket team is the country’s official cricket squad. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is in charge of the national squad (BCB). Test and One-Day International statuses with the International Cricket Council have been granted to Bangladesh. Against India, it played its maiden Test match in Dhaka in 2000, becoming Bangladesh the ninth country to play Test cricket.

Cricket was Bangladesh’s first step into the international stage, and it made its debut in the ICC Trophy in England in 1979, when it went 2-for-4. On 31 March 1986, Bangladesh played their debut One-Day International against Pakistan in the 1986 Asia Cup. Over time, cricket’s popularity in the country’s major cities has skyrocketed. Whilst football had been the most popular sport for quite some time, cricket quickly gained popularity and eclipsed football, particularly when Bangladesh won the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia. Bangladesh’s first appearance in the Cricket World Cup came in 1999 when they won this competition and shocked the cricketing world by defeating Pakistan. Since Bangladesh joined the ICC in 1997, they were granted the ability to participate in One-Day Internationals. It became a Test nation on June 26, 2000.

Between 1999 and 2002, Bangladesh suffered a record 21 straight defeats in Tests and One-Day Internationals (23 between 2001 and 2004). It took until 2004 for Bangladesh to win an ODI after the 1999 World Cup, long after it had become a full member of the ICC. Zimbabwe, which participated in Bangladesh’s first Test win in 2005, was on the losing side this time around. With a draw in the second game, Bangladesh won their first Test series. Bangladesh won their first-ever series on foreign soil in 2009 when they traveled there and swept the West Indies in two Tests.
